Why should you never use coarse adjustment when focusing the high-power objective lens of a microscope?

Once you get the item generally focused with the coarse adjustment, leave it alone. If you try to move it again, chance are you'll run into the slide and either knock the specimen or even scratch the microscope's lens. Always use the fine adjustment, and ONLY the fine adjustment knob, once you have set the coarse adjustment to the appropriate level.
