Please help. Chemistry-Esters?

In experiment where mixing an alcohol and acid to produce ester and water, why do we add sulfuric acid? For example put 10 drops of methanol in a test tube and add 3 drops of sulfuric acid. mix the liquids cautiously and then add 10 drops of ethanoic acid. Please explain why do we need sulfuric acid. Any help appreciated!
