Can regular white vinegar substitute white distilled vinegar when making red velvet cupcakes?

I want to make red velvet cupcakes for my grandma's birthday and the recipe asks for distilled vinegar. I have no idea what that is, can I just use white vinegar instead or will it not work/taste bad?
